World leaders are currently poised to descend upon Glasgow for COP26, an event which could well be the last opportunity to rescue the future of our habitable planet from the current climate emergency. Which leaves many of us turning our thoughts to our own contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and what we can do to limit them.

COP is the place where the structural causes of these issues could finally be remedied. Yet the impact of individuals and businesses on the biosphere is still of major concern. In the UK, businesses make up 17% of our total emissions and the energy and transport sectors, with which businesses are closely linked, are responsible for 25% and 26% respectively.

“But I’m just one person within one business. What can I do to make change?”, is something we’ve said to ourselves in the past — we’re sure you have, too. But within our own spheres of influence, steps can be taken to mitigate our impact. This is the focus of the UN’s current Race to Zero campaign, which encourages member organisations to pledge a commitment to reaching net zero GHG emissions as soon as possible, while setting out clear plans about how individual businesses will achieve this.
